UPDATE: Fire At Ansonia’s Hilltop Health Center

PHOTO: Tony SpinelliFirefighters are investigating what caused two clothes dryers to catch on fire in a basement laundry room of the Hilltop Health Center on Ford Street Friday morning.

The fire was reported at 11:12 a.m.

One firefighter was sent to a local hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation, according to Assistant Fire Chief Michael Eheman.

Three maintenance workers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Eheman said.

No patients were injured or evacuated, Eheman said. Instead, staff members secured them in their rooms.

The hospital did a fantastic job securing the patients,” Eheman said.

The 90-bed facility is located about a block away from the Woodbridge town line.

Firefighters from Derby and Shelton rushed to the scene to join Ansonia firefighters, and an ambulance from Seymour came to help if needed, Eheman said.

The maintenance workers who suffered smoke inhalation had rushed into the basement laundry room to try to extinguish the flames. The fire created a lot of smoke in one hallway, Eheman said.
Mayor Jim Della Volpe went to the scene and appraised the situation.

They got it out quickly, and the facility was well prepared,” Della Volpe said. It was a good response.”
