UPDATE: Firefighters Battle House Fire In Derby

A volunteer firefighter was taken to Griffin Hospital for smoke inhalation after fighting a house fire on Mount Pleasant Street in Derby Tuesday night.

Chief James Butler said he believed the firefighter was doing OK.

As of 9:45 p.m., firefighters from several departments around the Valley continued to work on hot spots remaining in the home’s attic.

People were home when the fire started. They were able to escape. Firefighters were not sure how many people were in the house.

A cause has not been determined, but the worst of the damage appeared to be in the attic and upper floors.

Butler said the call for the fire came in at about 7 p.m.

The home is at the end of Mount Pleasant Street, where it meets Derby Avenue. Both roads remained closed as of 9:45 p.m.

Butler said fighting the fire was very difficult because of the steep incline of the road. The houses are very close together on the block as well.

There were also a lot of crawl spaces and partitions in the attic, which was filled with items that fed the fire for more than two hours.

The fire marshal’s office is investigaint.

Fire crews from Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour and Orange were called in for mutual aid.

The following was posted at 8:11 p.m.

Firefighters are battling a large house fire on Mount Pleasant Street.

Emergency crews have been on the scene since at least 7:30 p.m.

Smoke can be seen from Route 8.

As of 8:04 p.m., there was smoke pouring from an attic window. Firefighters were using a ladder truck to extinguish the flames.

A neighbor who wouldn’t give her name said she helped a woman in the house escape with several pets.

The woman said everyone inside the house got out safely.

At least two dogs have been rescued.

Derby Avenue is closed in both directions.
