Dozens of firefighters from Oxford and surrounding towns battled a fast-moving fire that gutted a house on Scott Road Wednesday (Feb. 26) afternoon.
There were no injuries.
The fire was reported just before noon as a garage fire, Oxford Fire Department Chief Scott Pelletier said.
State police Sgt. Dan Semosky said at the scene the residents of the home noticed the fire and were able to call 911.
By the time firefighters arrived the the fire was “well involved” and had extended into the house, Pelletier said.
According to Oxford land records the home — at 2 Scott Road — is owned by Franklin and Susan Young.
Getting water to the scene was the main challenge for firefighters battling the blaze, Pelletier said.
“This end of town we have no hydrants,” the chief said.
The fire department called in tankers from surrounding towns to shuttle water from underground tanks on Bishop Road and dry hydrants on North Mark Drive and Maple Tree Hill Road, he said.

Fire trucks from Oxford, Seymour, Beacon Falls, and Southbury responded to the fire.
Firefighters also set up a portable pond at the end of the home’s driveway that tankers took turns filling with water.

Firefighters had knocked down the bulk of the blaze by about 12:30 p.m. but remained on scene for hours dousing hotspots.
By about 3 p.m. fire trucks from other towns that had responded to the blaze were being released from the scene.
The chief said once the flames are out for good he’ll try to find out the fire’s cause.
“It’s just too early,” Pelletier said about 2 p.m.
