Fireworks In Ansonia-Seymour, Derby-Shelton

Editor’s note: This story was first published June 23.

The Valley is preparing to light up the sky to celebrate Fourth of July and beyond with several fireworks displays and other festivities to mark America’s birthday.

The City of Shelton is scheduled to hold its annual fireworks display on Friday, July 1. It happens in downtown Shelton, next to the Housatonic River. The show usually starts around 9 p.m. or so. The rain date is July 2. Keep an eye on the Shelton City website and this Facebook page for updates.

For the second year in a row, the City of Derby will not be launching fireworks from the Derby side of the river. Mayor Rich Dziekan said this is because of the Route 34/Main Street widening project, which is underway.

However, the fireworks from Shelton are still visible from downtown Derby.

“The show every year is phenomenal and a real treat to watch,” Dziekan said via an email.

Prior to the fireworks, there is a concert scheduled for 7 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Canal Street. “New England’s No. 1 party band,” Darik and the Funbags will be rocking out. The walking path will be closed at 1 p.m. in preparation for the concert and fireworks. Beginning at 3 p.m. the municipal lot at the Farmer’s Market, 100 Canal St., will only be open to those with handicapped stickers.

In Ansonia-Seymour, Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti and Seymour First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis are joining forces for a second year in a row.

This year’s show is scheduled for Saturday, July 9 at sundown. Fireworks will be shot off from Fountain Lake in Ansonia, with prime viewing spots from Nolan Field on Wakelee Avenue in Ansonia, and next door in Seymour at the Tri-Town Plaza on Derby Avenue. The rain date for the Ansonia/Seymour fireworks is July 17.

“I’m thrilled to partner with First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis and Seymour for the second annual Fourth of July celebration,” Cassetti said.

Drugonis agreed, saying “We decided last year to do this together as a sense of coming together for our town and city.”

Drugonis and Cassetti are expected to announce the joint celebration via a Facebook video in the next few days.
