Several computers were ruined, ceilings tiles collapsed and workers had to be relocated after a flood in City Hall this week.
Mayor Anthony Staffieri said a piece of a machine in the custodian’s closet that dispenses hot and cold water into a chemical mix broke, causing untold hundreds of gallons of water to spill throughout the building.
The accident happened sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Staffieri said.
It was discovered by Fire Marshal Phil Hawks Thursday morning.
“The water ran overnight and there was an inch or so on the floor,” Staffieri said.
The water seeped from the third floor all the way into the basement. The tax office and town clerk’s office were among the damaged spaces, the mayor said.
“Some of the ceiling tiles fell down, the rugs were damaged and we lost a couple of computers,” Staffieri said.
The mayor didn’t have a dollar amount on the damages. The city could be on the hook for up to $10,000 —- which is thought to be its insurance deductible.
Servpro, a company that specializes in cleaning fire and water damage, was called to the deal with the mess.
Parts of the damaged areas were replaced in an effort to prevent mold. Dehumidifiers, fans and wet vacs were all over City Hall Thursday and Friday.
“They pulled out floor moldings near sheetrock. Those things will have to be replaced,” Staffieri said.
