Flood Warning Issued For Housatonic River

Officials are keeping an eye on the Housatonic River after recent heavy rains swelled the waterway above flood levels.

The river was at 13.48 feet as of 11:30 a.m. Friday. The flood level is 11 feet.

Shelton Police Chief Joel Hurliman said Friday about 11:30 a.m. that low-lying areas of the Maples area of Shelton were under about six to eight inches of water.

He said that the river is expected to crest at 8 p.m. Friday, but since water levels are difficult to predict, residents should exercise caution.

Our experience with the Maples is the water goes up rather quickly and down somewhat slowly,” Hurliman said.

While still drivable, Hurliman advised residents in low-lying areas to move their cars to higher ground, and to check their boats and docks to make sure they’re secure.
