Football Game Saturday In Derby To Benefit The Family Of Fallen State Trooper

DERBY — A football game to benefit the family of a state trooper who died in the line of duty is scheduled for Saturday at Derby High School’s DeFilippo Field (Chatfield Street and Hawthorne Avenue).

The game will feature first responders from across the tri-state area going head-to-head on the gridiron.

Connecticut State Trooper Sgt. Brian Mohl, a 26-year law enforcement veteran, lost his life when his cruiser was swept away in floodwaters near the Pomperaug River in Woodbury as the remnants of Hurricane Ida passed through the area last September. He was just 50 years old.

Mohl left behind a wife, Susan, a 14-year-old son, two stepchildren and three grandchildren, according to this report from The Associated Press.

The game Saturday between the Tri-State Shields vs. the NYCD Boldest will kick off at 2 p.m.

Game admission is $10, or $15 for admission and all you can eat and drink. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on game day, or by emailing mailto:theshieldsfootball@gmail.com. Click here for more information.

The line-up also includes bagpipes, an honor guard, a police canine show during halftime, live music and food, along with performances by the Derby High School band and Derby Pop Warner cheerleaders.

Derby High School Security Officer Shawn Wandel, a retired veteran of the New York City Police Department, is organizing the event. The Derby High School graduate plays for the Tri-State Shields, a football team of police, fire, corrections, courts, federal agents, military and EMS personnel from the tri-state area.

Wandel worked as a police officer in NYC for 23 years before retiring.

The Tri-State Shields are part of the National Public Safety League. The nonprofit league was established in 1997. The league’s goal is to raise awareness and promote a positive image of law enforcement, while raising funds for fallen heroes and various charities, including Make-A-Wish and other youth organizations, Wandel said.
