Former Shaw’s To Get $6 Million Makeover

The former Shaw’s Supermarket building could be getting restocked.

Grade A ShopRite of Shelton LLC wants to slightly expand the building at 875 Bridgeport Ave. from 64,394 square feet to 66,289 square feet.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission accepted the proposal at a special meeting in City Hall Tuesday night.

We’re very excited to come to Shelton,” said Rocco S. Cingari, company president. We’ll be an asset to the community and an asset to the whole area.”

He asked the panel to approve another loading dock for fresh items, including meat and seafood. Renovating the building could cost at least $6 million to $7 million, he added.

The store was built 20 years ago and the complexity of the food business has changed,” Cingari said.

Cingari also assured the commission we have not changed the traffic pattern.”

The board accepted the proposal and set a hearing for its next meeting Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.

Shaw’s closed the Shelton store earlier this year along with one other branch.

ShopRite has stores in communities including Derby, Milford, West Haven, Norwalk and Waterbury. The proposed store would employ 175 people and be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Wakefern Food Corp., ShopRite’s merchandising and distribution arm, and ShopRite together employ more than 50,000 people throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, according to the company’s Web site.
