Forum Monday On Possible Reconfiguration Of Derby Playing Fields

Derby residents are invited to a forum Monday to talk about possible changes to the city’s athletic fields.

The forum is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Derby Middle School cafeteria.

Derby schools are hoping to get funding from the state in order to install a turf football field surrounded by a new, 8‑lane track.

If the state funding comes through, the current playing fields may have to be reconfigured to make room for the renovations.

Derby doesn’t have much open space, so reconfiguring or moving one field could have a domino effect other fields.

The school district is working with the city to explore the options.

Click here for a Valley Indy story from March, when Derby School Superintendent Matthew Conway first broached the issue with a subcommittee of the Derby Board of Aldermen.

Changing the configuration of the city’s athletic fields has been brought up in the past.

Conway said in an email the district has copies of previous studies on the issue.

The goal (of Monday’s forum) is to provide everyone with an opportunity to share their thoughts, and ideas and the history of known challenges,” Conway said.

The middle school is across from Derby High School on Nutmeg Avenue.
