The fire marshal said an improperly installed furnace triggered a small fire inside a four-family house on North Spring Street Thursday morning.
No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at about 6:20 a.m. by an alarm company. A resident in the house also called the fire department.
The fire was contained to the furnace room. Fire Marshal Ralph Tingley said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.
Tingley said an investigation revealed that the furnace had not been installed properly.
Officials were not sure of its age, but said the furnace had been there for some time.
“It looks like the furnace was in contact with combustibles,” Tingley said.
