A meeting is scheduled for Saturday morning concerning the future of the St. Mary-St. Michael School.
The future of the small, kindergarten through eighth-grade Catholic school was cast into doubt after a packed Feb. 23 meeting, where parents came away with the impression that the pastors and trustees were going to recommend the Hartford Archdiocese close the school at the end of the school year.
Shortly after that meeting, a school official told the Valley Indy the closure worry was just a rumor.
It’s not a rumor — and the fate of the school could be decided Saturday.
Since February, parents have been mobilizing to come up with a viable financial plan to keep the school alive — and they may have come up with one.
In recent days, meetings were held at the Office of Catholic Schools between local pastors, parents and Catholic Schools Superintendent Dale Hoyt, among others.
Tomorrow’s meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the church hall at St. Michael’s Church, at the junction of routes 34 and 115.
There, a group of parents will be presenting their financial plan intended to keep the school open. The plan will be presented to school finance officials, local pastors and the parish trustees.
A unanimous approval must emerge from this meeting — or the school will close.
School supporters, students and parents are expected to start gathering at the St. Michael’s Church parking lot at 9:30 a.m. in a show of support for the school.
