Gaels Beat Tigers At Home

The Shelton High School baseball team defeated the Daniel Hand High School Tigers, 9 – 4, on Senior Night Friday at Shelton High School.

Senior Dan St. George gave the Gaels an early 1 – 0, first-inning lead with a golf shot that cleared the left field fence.

I knew I got it. I was happy because I haven’t been able to hit one this year,” said St. George. I was able to keep my hands in and was able to get a good piece of it.”

Cleanup hitter Mike Georgalas followed up with a double and was knocked in with a single by Ryan Daiss to extend the lead to 2 – 0.

Hand put together two runs in the second inning with singles by Alex Shaw and Ryan Gill.

The Gaels bounced right back in their half of the second inning.

It started when leadoff hitter, Ryan Christensen, singled with two outs and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Gaels a 3 – 2 lead.

Georgalas led off the fourth with a double that landed just a few feet away from being a home run.

I’m seeing the ball good tonight. You get good extension and the ball is going far,” said Georgalas of his three-for-four performance.

Carl Cristino stepped into the batter’s box and hit a double of his own to bring in Georgalas, making the lead 4 – 2.

Tom Carroll found himself in a pitching jam as the Tigers came within one run at 4 – 3 and had runners on the corners with just one out.

Carroll managed a double play ball that was smoothly played by St. George and Christensen.

We practice that a lot,” said St. George.

Christensen started the fourth inning with a booming double and was driven in by fellow co-captain St. George, giving the Gaels a 5 – 3 lead.

St. George then stole second base and was subsequently driven in by Georgalas’ second double of the game, giving the Gaels a 6 – 3 lead.

The Gaels rallied to load the bases in the fifth inning, bringing Christensen to the plate.

Christensen hit a check swing blooper that went over the head of the Tigers first baseman for a double and an 8 – 3 lead.

I’m getting mellow at the plate – more calm. I take a deep breath in and hit,” said Christensen on his mental approach to hitting.

Carroll had five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
