UPDATE: Classic Corvette Sparks Seymour Fire

A car fire spread to a single family home on Amber Drive Friday morning — destroying a blue classic Corvette and damaging rooms above the home’s garage.

Homeowner Raymond Granata said he started up the car in the garage at about 9:20 a.m., and then the engine caught fire.

Granata was able to get the car outside of the garage as the flames grew.

The car burned in his driveway for about 15 minutes, according to Seymour Fire Chief Thomas Tomasheski.

The flames shot toward the home, and burned the garage and a room above the garage.

He was able to push the car out of the garage,” said Granata’s wife, Diane. If he hadn’t been able to do that, it would have been a lot worse.”

Five fire engines responded to the fire, and Oxford volunteers were called in for mutual aid.

As of 10 a.m., the volunteers were removing smoldering insulation from the room above the garage.

Firefighters were still assessing the damage.

No one was injured in the fire, Tomasheski said.
