John Ruggiero of Ansonia displays a “Puffball Mushroom” that he and his girlfriend came across recently while mushrooming in the Valley.
Puffballs have been known to grow as big as a beach ball.
To prepare this delicacy, slice the puffball, sauté it, steam it, or simmer it in soups, like other mushrooms. It’s also great baked or grilled. It has a rich, earthy flavor with a texture of marshmallows.
Whether picking puffballs or any other wild mushrooms outdoors, picking them should be left to those knowledgeable of the difference between the good and the poison ones.
