The Shelton Youth Service Bureau is pleased to announce that it has received a $2,000 grant from the Valley United Way to be used to support the benefits of conflict resolution through the implementation of a mediation program for students and staff into the Shelton Intermediate School.
The grant was awarded through the Valley United Way’s Special Needs Grant Program and will help to fund a two-day training for interested staff members of the school and key community members. Interested students of Shelton Intermediate School will be trained at a later date and the program will be in place for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
“Let’s Talk” is the pilot program that will introduce students to anger management, communication skills, problem solving and decision making and will encourage them to stay in school and overcome obstacles in school, at home and in the community. Through this program, students may also find a caring adult that they will connect with – someone to help them keep talking.
Currently, elementary schools in Shelton have The Peacemakers – a conflict resolution program designed for students in elementary school. The goal is to continue this program into the intermediate school through ”Let’s Talk” and eventually into the high school population.
If you have any questions about this program, or would like to become involved, please call Ms. Julie Penry at the Shelton Youth Service Bureau at 203 – 924-7614.
