Great Give Raises $3.3 Million, Donations Accepted Through May 7

The Great Give, a 36-hour online fundraiser for more than 400 nonprofit groups, raised about $3.3 million as of Thursday morning.

The annual event organized by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven kicked off 8 a.m. Tuesday and ended 8 p.m. Wednesday.

However, gifts to the nonprofit of your choice are being accepted through Friday. Visit TheGreatGive.org and use the search function to make a donation.

About 14,600 people donated.

This year’s Great Give was especially important because of the impact COVID-19 is having on area nonprofits and the community at large.

Some 40 Valley organizations participated this year, including groups such as TEAM, Inc., which has been on the front line battling the pandemic’s economic impact.

The Online Journalism Project, the nonprofit that publishes The New Haven Independent, The Valley Independent Sentinel, and WNHH radio in New Haven, was a beneficiary and active participant during The Great Give.

WNHH radio held a Great Give radiothon” to promote the event and highlight other nonprofits.

The Valley Indy used Facebook Live to conduct 21 video interviews during The Great Give with Valley nonprofit leaders and newsmakers (three additional interviews were postponed for technical issues, but are being rescheduled).

Tom Simonetti of The Valley Shakespeare Festival opened The Valley Indy’s livestream with a song. 

Selectman Chris Bowen did 20 pushups as part of his personal fundraiser for Mission 22, an organization that helps military veterans with post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries.

The Assumption School organized a live version of Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” with students and several parents. Students ran the table, getting 20 questions correct.

Readers gave $14,356 to The Valley Indy. One hundred and sixty seven people supported the cause.
