Green Knights Trounce Gaels

Seven turnovers helped seal the fate of the Shelton Gaels in a 31 – 10 loss Friday to Notre Dame of West Haven.

You can’t turn the ball over and expect to win the game and we committed seven, which cost us the game,” Gaels coach Jeff Roy said.

The Green Knights raised their record to 2 – 1. Shelton dropped to 1 – 2.

The Gaels began the game on their 30 and moved it to the NDWH 21, but the Green Knights sacked quarterback Jonathan Groth for a six-yard loss to make it fourth-and-15. Groth then scrambled for a 12-yard gain but was short of the first down.

The drive pretty much summarized Shelton’s night.

Shelton’s defensive wasn’t as ineffective as the score suggests. The West Haven crew kept capitalizing on the turnovers.

The defense played well and they were put in rough spots because of the turnovers,” Roy said.

In the fourth quarter, Groth threw two interceptions.

With time winding down, Groth broke tackles and ran 46 yards to the Green Knight 24 with four seconds to go in the game, hit Mike Georgalas for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

The ball wasn’t bouncing our way,” Georgalas said.
