On Saturday, April 24th, the Shelton Knights of Columbus Council #1350 & #14014 will host the annual Greenway 5k Charity Road Race along the banks of the Naugatuck River in Derby.
The race, which begins and ends on the Greenway Riverwalk in Derby, starting at the municipal parking lot across from Housatonic Lumber, kicks off at 8:30 AM.
The course runs along the scenic Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers on the paved riverwalk pathway. The flat, easy 5k measured course is an out and back raceway that meanders along the rivers amid walkers and spectators.
The Greenway 5k Charity Run is a fundraising event sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus Councils and all of the money raised will go to local charities in the Valley. Bernardo Council #1350 is made up of catholic gentlemen from the parishes of St. Joseph’s and St. Margaret Mary’s in Shelton. Council #14014 is made up from men from St Lawrence parish in Shelton. They are local non-profit, volunteer organizations dedicated to helping families in need in Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, and surrounding areas.
“We are very excited to bring this type of event to the Valley as an opportunity to showcase the beautiful, scenic greenway along the rivers in an event that combines volunteerism, family fun, and healthy activities for a good cause” Mitch Marcinauskis, Grand Knight of the Bernardo Council said.
Participants can walk or run the 5k (3.1 miles) and enjoy the beautiful scenery while helping those in need in the Valley.
Traditional award categories will be given to the fastest runners in different age groups, with a special category for Brother Knights of Columbus members.
Interested persons may register for the race online at www.hitekracing.com/greenway5k. The event is limited to only 200 runners.
