DERBY — Griffin Hospital officials are planning to tear down the former Birmingham Health Center at 210 Chatfied St.
The plan is to use the property as an employee parking lot, at least in the short term, according to statements made by city officials at recent government meetings.
Birmingham Health Center, near Osbornedale State Park and the Derby High School/Middle School campus, closed in 2018 after its owner, Spectrum Health Care, LLC, went into bankruptcy. About 120 people lost their jobs.
A Texas-based business entity called McFarlin GP Invest LP took over property in 2019 for an undisclosed sum. McFarlin got it when the property went into foreclosure after the bankruptcy.
The hospital purchased the 110-bed vacant nursing home in 2019 and has been using the existing parking lot for employee parking.
Griffin Health has the hospital, a cancer center and various medical offices all within about a half-mile of 210 Chatfield St. Parking is an issue at the hospital and the surrounding streets.
When the demo work will start was not clear as of Tuesday (April 14), though the building has been marked “DEMO” on its side.
At a recent Aldermen/Alderwomen meeting, Derby Fire Department Commissioner Gary Parker thanked Griffin for allowing the Ansonia and Derby fire department to use the vacant building and grounds for training exercises in late March. Click here for images from the training.
