GUEST COLUMN: Inter-Library Loan Program Should Be Funded

During difficult economic times, our public libraries offer residents job search opportunities and resources, information for students, programs for young mothers and families and so much more. We are pleased that the Shelton libraries have not had a reduction in staff or hours and continue to be open to serve their users.

Two years ago, the Shelton library book budget was cut in half and has remained unchanged. Users of all ages are frustrated by the lack of access to much needed current materials.

Shelton is a major participant in the state library’s Connecticar program, a service that delivers millions of dollars worth of materials to users requesting them at Connecticut’s public and academic libraries.

The Governor and legislature are searching for places to cut funding in order to begin balancing the budget. There is a proposal in the state legislature that would gut the Connecticar delivery program. If that funding is cut, our already compromised library system is Shelton will be devastated.

Visit the legislative town hall meeting at 6 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday March 29 at Shelton City Hall.

Let your legislators know the importance of funding this statewide transport system. You can telephone or Email State Senator Kevin Kelly, State Representatives Larry Miller and Jason Perillo and support this service.

Your library will be pleased to provide the contact information needed.
