GUEST COLUMN: Old Sentinel Article Recalled

Hi from Chicago,

I am an Ansonia native and I like keeping up with things back home through the Valley Independent Sentinel. I enjoyed your podcast today and it sent me running for a little story my grandma clipped from the Evening Sentinel, circa 1964.

It is a very short piece that was rushed into the afternoon paper that day but so packed with facts.

It is a little look at the old Valley with the captain of a fire company owning a corner store and an Alderman who worked for the water company taking a company truck for an emergency run to the hospital.

Butcher Cuts Hip While Boning Meat

John Brady, 35, of 3 Woodbridge Avenue was rushed to Griffin Hospital shortly before noon today with a gashed hip. Mr. Brady, who is treasurer of Brady’s Market, was boning meat when the knife he was using slipped and struck him in the hip. He was rushed to the hospital by Alderman John J. Keefe, foreman and John Leahy of the Ansonia Water Company. Mr. Keefe and Leahy were passing by the store in a truck when Mr. Brady, captain of the Webster Hose Company, came out holding his hip.

John Brady is my dad, who now lives on James Street in Ansonia.

Thanks for helping me keep up with Valley news.

The writer, Maureen Moran, is a native of Ansonia who now lives in Chicago.
