Guest Columnist Wants Details On Downtown Shelton Project

From a Feb. 6 legal notice in the CT Post: CITY OF SHELTON BID#33 – 32 Sealed Bids (IN DUPLICATE) will be received at the Office of the Purchasing Agent, 54 Hill Street Shelton, Connecticut 06484, until 11:00 A.M. local time on Thursday February 28 , 2013 at 3:00 pm on such date, in room 104 of City Hall where they will be publicly opened and read aloud for: BID#33 – 32 RECONSTRUCTION OF CANAL STREET PHASE 1 The City of Shelton is an Equal Opportunity Employer Gene Sullivan Purchasing Agent February 2013”

Board of Aldermen: What is the source of this funding? What are the projected taxpayer costs for the remainder of the project? What are the taxpayer dollars already spent since the inception of the project?

Planning and Zoning: Are taxpayer funded costs an unforeseen consequence not recognized at the time of your zoning approvals? The downtown redevelopment area is continually being expanded. Are upfront taxpayer costs a consideration when expanding the redevelopment area?

Why are taxpayers absorbing costs associated with Canal Street Reconstruction? Developer investments are the cause for increased traffic yet taxpayers are absorbing road expansion costs. This at a time when Shelton leadership has difficulty supporting public works employees in keeping the plows working and the roads open.
