Why This Event Is Happening

Griffin Health is promoting the event as a way to say thank you to families who have opted to get the COVID-19 vaccine, and to encourage more vaccinations.

Vaccinations have been shown to reduce the risk of serious illness from COVID-19.

According to data released Monday
from the state Department of Health:

* Of the 1,889 patients currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, 1,287 (68.1 percent) are not fully vaccinated.

The U.S. is in the middle of another COVID-19 surge, with Connecticut picking up about 10,000 cases per day. Hospitalizations in the state are approaching an all-time high, The Hartford Courant reported.

Positive cases in Ansonia increased 111 percent in Ansonia between Dec. 19 and Jan. 1. Cases in Derby increased 29 percent over the same period.

In Ansonia, 11.9 percent of children between 5 and 11 are vaccinated. In Derby, 44.3 percent of children between 5 and 11 are vaccinated.

In Ansonia, 47 percent of people between 12 and 17 are vaccinated. In Derby, 91.6 percent of people between 12 and 17 are vaccinated.

In Derby, the school district superintendent regularly sends home info about positive cases within the schools. On Monday night he sent an email to parents saying two staff members and three students from Irving School had tested positive, along with six students from Derby Middle School, three students from Bradley School, and 10 students from Derby High School.

In Ansonia, school was canceled last week due to the fact that 25 percent of the staff couldn’t report to work because of the virus.

Meanwhile, testing capacity is overwhelmed, which is why towns across the state have been giving away face masks and home test kits to the public, supplied by the state.
