Harvest House III This Saturday

There’s a whole lot of help (and a little bit of fun) going on in Derby and Shelton this Saturday.

8:30 a.m. Join Area Congregations Together Spooner House to Walk for the Hungry and Homeless” at the Derby greenway. 

September is Hunger Action Month so participants are asked to make donations in any amount that fits their budget, ask others to sponsor them for additional funds and seek matching donations from employers. However, a minimum donation of $20 will be required for a participant to receive the commemorative walk T‑shirt. All proceeds benefit ACT Spooner House and the Valley Food Bank Network.

9 a.m. Harvest House III starts at the Shelton Riverwalk. 

The event is a way for the Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council to collect food donations for needy families in the area. A 400 square-foot house is built using more than 100,000 donated non-perishible items. After the event, the food is distributed through local agencies like the Valley YMCA or the Spooner House. 

The Harvest House event is the start of the United Way’s Week of Caring” where volunteers from the Corporate Volunteer Council work on service projects in the area. 

I’m confident that the Valley community will once again reach out by donating food and joining hands to build’ this one-of-a-kind Harvest House,” said Patricia Tarasovic, director of the Valley United Way’s Volunteer Center, in a statement. Many people are struggling to feed their families and it’s important to help our neighbors in need.”

2 p.m. You built the house, now have some fun with Echo Hose Ambulance, as the department celebrates its 60th anniversary with a community picnic at the Shelton Riverwalk. Echo Hose will have touch an ambulance” activities for children, games, moon-bounces, food and entertainment by the Highland Rovers Band. 

Echo Hose asks participants to bring non-perishible food donations to give toward the Harvest House build.

Sunday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. – Public viewings of the Harvest House will be held.
