Have A Record? Ansonia’s Arkeel Newsome Will Break It

Connecticut sports writers are buzzing — and rightly so — over Arkeel Newsome breaking the state’s rushing record during a 56 – 21 win over Masuk last night.

Newsome is now Connecticut’s all-time leading rusher. He intends to play football for the University of Connecticut next year.

Arkeel Newsome dipped one defender, burst around the edge, flipped around another would-be tackler and stumbled into the end zone,” writes CT Post scribe Doug Bonjour. At times, he was simply too elusive to bring down. Other times, he was too physical. Most often, he was just too fast.”

MIke Pucci at the Register’s Game Time CT points out just how dominant Newsome’s has been:

Newsome needed 291 yards to surpass (former Ansonia gridiron great Alex) Thomas, who finished his career with 8,279 yards from 2004 – 2007. Newsome now has career totals of 716 carries for 8,385 yards (11.71 yards per carry). Newsome added to the state records he already owns for career touchdowns (145) and points (900). Newsome has season totals of 106 carries for 1,580 yards and 26 touchdowns.”
