Hazmat Call On Ansonia’s Main Street

Ansonia fire and police officials are investigating how some kind of acid ended up in the gas tank of a red sedan.

The car was towed into Auto Repairs Unlimited on Main Street Tuesday for service, according to Fire Chief Ron Burgess.

When crews started working on the car, somehow a gas line got cut and a liquid spilled out on a worker’s hand, they disconnected the fuel line, and liquid spilled out on a worker’s hand, burning it, Burgess said.

It happened at about 4:45 p.m.

The worker was not seriously injured. He was evaluated at the scene by Ansonia Rescue Medical Services crews, and did not go to the hospital for the injury.

The fire department, police department and state Department of Environmental Protection were called in to investigate the car — and figure out what the liquid is, and why it’s in the car’s gas tank.

As of 5:30 p.m., a haz-mat team was on scene investigating the car, but there were still not clear answers.

Burgess said the car was towed in from Derby, but he didn’t say who owned the car, or if the owner knew about the acid.

Father Salemi Drive was closed off at Main Street and Bishop Williams Court due to the incident.
