Help Raise Money To Fight Childhood Cancers

The Derby Fire Department is hosting a fundraiser tonight (Tuesday, April 30) to benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a group that raises money to help kids with cancer.

The event, where firefighters and anyone from the public can have their heads shaved in a show of solidarity for ailing children, is 7 p.m. at Bar None on Elizabeth Street.

The following Q & A was conducted with Derby firefighter David Tropia, who organized tonight’s event.

Valley Independent Sentinel:About how much money has the Derby Fire Department raised in the last few years with this fundraiser?

David Tropia: This is the third year the Derby Fire Department has hosted a St.Baldrick’s event. Our 2011 and 2012 events raised over $29,000 to fight childhood cancers. As of this moment, we are a bit shy of our 2013 $20,000 target.”

VIS: Which fire house usually raises the most money? I assume there’s friendly competition?

Tropia: Each year, we invite all four fire companies that make up the Derby Fire Department in a friendly competition to see who can raise the most money. The Hotchkiss Hose Company #1 holds the title for most money earned, followed closely by Paugassett Hook & Ladder Co. #4.”

VIS: Have you personally challenged anyone to shave their head? Mayor Staffieri, perhaps?

Tropia: We actually haven’t challenged anyone personally to shave their head. The mayor is a great suggestion. Tony, if you’re reading, come on down!”

VIS:What do you get out of the event? I mean, why do you take the time to organize this event?

Tropia: A few years ago, the members of the Hotchkiss had the opportunity to help a young lady and support her family as she fought childhood cancer. She sadly lost her fight after a long, brave battle.

We learned about the St.Baldrick’s foundation and organized our own event in 2011, allowing us to actively fight against childhood cancers.

St. Baldrick’s has raised over $103 million since 2005 for childhood cancer research, second only in funding to the U.S. government. And this type of event really fits the mission of the fire service. Being a firefighter is about being a good neighbor, serving our community and doing good. Old fashioned values that are alive and well in the volunteer fire service in the Derby.”

VIS: Can anyone show up and get their head shaved after giving a donation?

Tropia: Tuesday’s (April 30) event is open to the public. All are invited and we would be honored to have citizens of Derby join and participate in raising funds.

You may even register the night of the event to shave your head, standing in solidarity with kids with cancer. The event begins at 7 p.m. and we are being graciously hosted by Bar None, 87 Elizabeth St., Derby.

For those who have already donated, thank you for your generosity. For those that haven’t, please join us Tuesday night or make a donation at our St.Baldrick’s website. All donations are tax deductible.”
