The 34 newly reported cases comes after the NVHD reported 31 new COVID-19 cases last week.

In Derby, Mayor Rich Dziekan announced Monday he had tested positive for COVID-19. He was experiencing cold-like symptoms Monday and Tuesday.

Derby City Hall was closed to the public Tuesday to be disinfected. The building will also be closed to the public and employees on Wednesday.

One other City Hall employee has COVID-19 symptoms. That person has been tested, but had not received the results of the test as of Tuesday afternoon. The person has not been in City Hall since Thursday.

Derby Public Schools has reported two recent cases. On Saturday, the Derby superintendent sent a letter saying a person within the district had tested positive. Parents said the person was connected to the Irving School. On Tuesday, the superintendent sent a letter home saying a person connected to Derby Middle School had tested positive.

The schools are still open and contact tracing is happening.

On the state level, Connecticut’s positivity rate was 2.4 percent Tuesday. That’s above what the rate was over the summer, when it hovered just under 1 percent. The Hartford Courant noted Tuesday’s number is the highest positivity rate in the state since June, but still well under other parts of the U.S.

There have been COVID-19 flare ups in Norwich and New London. State health officials believe those incidents have been driven by small-scale gatherings — not necessarily by the return of students to schools and colleges, the Courant reported.

Locally, the new cases being reported are skewing younger.

The NVHD report Tuesday shows 10 of the new 31 COVID cases were people between the age of 0 and 19. A dozen people were between the ages of 40 and 59.
