Hit And Run Beer Smash Nets Arrest In Seymour

Seymour police arrested a Seymour woman for various motor vehicle and criminal charges after a hit-and-run accident gone wild last week.

Police said Melissa Huggins, 26, of Maple Street, drove into a beer distribution truck parked at John’s Deli, then threatened the driver before smashing two cases of beer on the ground.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. on Dec. 2.

Huggins was driving and allegedly talking on her cell phone when she hit the beer distribution truck, which was parked close to the roadway, according to Lt. Paul Satkowski.

John’s Deli is at the corner of Pearl and Maple streets.

After hitting the truck, Huggins allegedly got out of her car and entered the deli. Police said she began swearing at the driver and threatening him.

The driver called police. Huggins left the store. Police said Huggins then opened the back of the beer distribution truck, took out two cases (24 bottles), and smashed them on the ground. The beer was valued at about $60, Satkowski said.

Huggins then drove away.

Satkowski said several witnesses provided statements to police. Huggins made a statement to police in which she confirmed the accident, but denied that she broke the beer bottles or threatened the driver.

Huggins was charged with second-degree breach of peace, third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree threatening.

She was also charged with evading responsibility, using a cell phone while driving, operating an unregistered car, and failure to drive right.

Huggins appeared at Superior Court in Derby Friday morning to answer the motor vehicle charges, and is scheduled to be arraigned for the other charges on Monday.

She is free on a $500 bond.
