The Spooner House annual frozen turkey and fixings drive is underway for people in need this holiday season in the lower Naugatuck Valley.
There will be four locations collecting holiday food during the week of Nov. 15.
Dr. Bruce Sofferman of Smile Dental Centers and Dr. Sofferman’s Sleep and TMJ Solutions Center will be collecting frozen turkeys and the fixings in a “Stuff a Sable” food drive from Monday through Friday, Nov. 15 – 19 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at their Oxford and Derby locations.

The Smile Dental Center in Oxford is at 318 Oxford Road (Route 67), and Dr. Sofferman’s Sleep and TMJ Solutions Center in Derby is next door to Smile Dental Center at 63 Elizabeth Street. Dr. Sofferman and his wife Deborah will be wearing traditional Pilgrim costumes and joined by a turkey mascot on November 17 from 7 to 10 a.m. in Oxford and again on November 18 from 8 to10 a.m. in Derby.
Also from Monday through Friday, Nov. 15 – 19, Cammisa’s Garage at 344 River Road in Shelton will be collecting only non-perishable holiday food donations, no turkeys. Food may be dropped off between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bob Cammisa will offer anyone making a donation a free, check under the hood “winter inspection” of belts and anti-freeze.
The final drive location will in Seymour and will be held on Saturday, November 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The eighth grade Gold Team from Seymour Middle School will be at 211 Mountain Road, again this year collecting only frozen turkeys.
During the past year, Spooner House provided 125,000 food bank meals, which were distributed throughout the Valley. Two years ago the number of meals was only 61,000. This means the need has more than doubled in the last two years.
“The area homeless and low income residents are always the first to need help and the last to recover from any recession,” explained Susan J. Agamy, Executive Director of Spooner House. “Many of our food bank users manage to get by most months, but as the holidays approach the pinch sets in and they need help to obtain all the ingredients necessary for satisfying holiday meals. We will need hundreds more non-perishable fixings, frozen turkeys and/or cash donations to fill the void this year, so we are asking everyone with means to be as generous as possible.”
A list of specific food items needed for the frozen turkey drive is at the end of the release or visit www.actspooner.org for more details.
