Two men escaped major injuries after colliding with a telephone and fire hydrant on New Haven Avenue Friday morning.
Derby Fire Chief William Nicoletti said the crash happened at about 1:40 a.m. in the westbound lanes in the area of 185 New Haven Ave.
It involved one car — a Honda Civic.
“He (the driver) somehow went off the roadway, hit a utility pole and snapped it at its base,” Nicoletti said. “Next he hit a fire hydrant and snapped that at its base. The vehicle came to rest about 20 feet after that.”
The two men in the Civic were out of the car as firefighters arrived. They were taken to the hospital to get checked out, but did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters and ambulance crews had a logistical problem getting to the patients due to the live electrical wires on the ground. The crashed also pulled live wires off a nearby house.
New Haven Avenue (Route 34) was shut for about 40 minutes.
Police are investigating.
