There was a little extra water in the Housatonic River Thursday night.
Firefighters from the Hotchkiss Hose Co. tested out their new fire engine capabilities along the river bank near the Derby boat launch Thursday.
The city purchased the 2009 1,500-gallon pumper engine for the fire department last month. The department put the engine into service on Monday, said Derby’s fire marshal Phil Hawks.
The engine has a 15 kilowatt generator to power a 600-watt light for night responses, Hawks said. And the engine has a compressed air foam system to more efficiently fight some fires, Hawks said.
There is also an inflatable life boat on the engine for water rescues, Hawks said.
