Housatonic Headache

Residents along the Housatonic River in Oxford, Seymour and Shelton say they’re experiencing the worst flooding they’ve seen in at least a decade.

The Houstonic was some nine feet above its flood stage at about 7 a.m. Monday.

Shelton emergency crews declared a mandatory evacuation from the Maples on their side of the Housatonic. Derby Storm Engine used a boat to get one woman out of her house in McConney’s Grove.

Large metal trash bins could be seen floating along the Housatonic, along with a collection of docks, row boats and even a storage shed.

In Seymour, residents used sandbags in their basements to keep the water at bay.

In Oxford the water from the Housatonic covered yards and touched Route 34.

When people wake up this morning, I’m sure people will be seeing water in their basements,” said Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief Thomas Lenart, Jr.

Those who live on the shores of the Housatonic said they started receiving emergency notifications about possible flooding Sunday around noon. However, the water rose some six inches between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. They flooding is much worse than they expected, residents said.
