One firefighter was injured and a home was destroyed in a late morning fire on Geissler Drive Monday.
The fire was first reported at about 11:15 a.m.
The homeowner, Beverly Uberti, was able to get out of the house and call 911 when a fire started at about 11:15 a.m. in the rear kitchen of her home at 56 Geissler Drive.
Fire Chief Francis Jones said the firefighter suffered an undetermined minor injury and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The single-family home received about $500,000 in damage from the fire and smoke, said Fire Marshal James Tortora.
“The house is destroyed,” Tortora said.
Tortora was still investigating the scene at about noon, but said it appeared the fire was started by a toaster oven in the kitchen.
Jones said when firefighters arrived on scene, smoke and flames were shooting out the kitchen doorway.
The fire stayed in two rooms of the house, Jones said, but the entire building received smoke and water damage.
At about 11:45 a.m., firefighters were still venting the home by breaking through most of its windows.
Smoke continued to pour from the attic area until just after noon.
Uberti’s daughter Kim Wentz said only her parents live in the home.
They’ve been in the house for 30 years, Wentz said.
“She had a lot of really, really, really nice things in there,” Wentz said. “But at least she got out alive.”
Wentz said they will arrange a place for her parents to stay.
About 35 volunteers responded to the fire, and mutual aid from surrounding towns was called in to cover Shelton during the fire.
