ANSONIA — Six houses on the Hull Street cul-de-sac were evacuated for a short time Thursday after contractors hit a natural gas line.

The contractors were apparently in the process of installing fiber optic lines. The name of the company they were working for wasn’t immediately available and the workers’ vehicles were not marked.

The accident happened about 5 p.m. Eversource crews were able to shut off the gas line by 6 p.m. and were working on a fix.

We evacuated six houses and shut off gas service to those houses,” Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia said. We stretched a precautionary hand (water) line in case of any problems, then we pretty much waited for Eversource to shut the gas off.”

In addition to the Ansonia units, a Derby rescue truck was called to the scene. The Seymour Fire Department was called to cover Ansonia while Ansonia units were on scene.

A small bus owned by Ansonia Rescue Medical Services also responded to the scene so that residents could have a seat until they were allowed back into their homes.

Residents were back inside as of 6 p.m.

Hull Street is off Silver Hill Road in Ansonia, not far from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Cemetery.
