A Shelton man accused of stabbing his sister may enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity next month.
Toa Nguyen was arrested in October 2010 after allegedly attacking his sister in their Maple Street apartment.
Nguyen attacked the woman out of the blue, using a knife to cut her throat, police said. She managed to fight him off and run from the apartment.
There was so much blood in the apartment police at first thought Nguyen was injured, too. He wasn’t.
Nguyen has a history of mental health issues — and violence.
In 2008 he beat his father badly using the Club, an anti-theft device used on car steering wheels.
He served time in prison and was released in 2010.
Nguyen entered the U.S. illegally. Authorities tried to deport him after he attacked his father. Officials in Vietnam, his native country, refused to take him.
Nguyen’s next court date is May 18.
His case was called Thursday in Superior Court in Milford, where a prosecutor said Nguyen may enter that plea.
If Nguyen enters an insanity plea and the case goes to trial, Nguyen’s lawyers would have to prove he wasn’t in his right mind at the time of the attack.
