Judge Continues Case Of Sleeping Bus Driver

The court case against a former Shelton school bus driver accused of falling asleep behind the wheel with 30 children onboard was continued at Superior Court in Derby Wednesday.

The driver, 55-year-old Paul Pixley, of Derby, was scheduled to appear before a judge for the second time since his Dec. 27 arrest, but his lawyer waived his presence.

Tthe lawyer, Public Defender Jonathan Gable, told Judge Peter Brown he was still investigating the case.

The judge then continued the case to Feb. 22 at Gable’s request.

Pixley, who was fired as a bus driver last month, has been jailed in lieu of $75,000 bond since his arrest.

The arrest warrant in the case indicated Pixley had fallen asleep behind the wheel of a school bus at least once before the Dec. 17 incident for which he faces 30 felony counts of risk of injury to a minor, as well as other charges.

The Shelton school district and police department are reviewing how they handled the incidents.
