The “Keystone Bombers,” the Keystone Club from the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, received a national project award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America at its National Conference in November.
The Keystone Club is a youth leadership group for high school-aged youth who perform community service projects and fundraise to attend youth leadership conferences.
This year’s project, “Take a Stand,” has teens from almost 50 states, as well as teens on military bases around the world, battling poverty. The Bombers’ project was to reach out to families who had children who were not Boys & Girls Club members and make sure those children received memberships to the Boys & Girls Club. Along with memberships, we provided Thanksgiving baskets, Christmas toys, and high school-aged mentors. The children’s progress is tracked by our teens to make sure they are doing well in school and in everyday life.
The conference, which was hosted by the Worcester Boys & Girls Club, was also attended by 375 other teens from 11 different Northeast States. The youth were able to hear inspiring stories from NECN news anchor Latoya Edwards and Freedom Writer Maria Reyes. The highlight of the conference was a dinner cruise on the Spirit of Boston yacht.
