Kitchen Fire Damages Derby Apartment

A kitchen fire damaged a third-floor apartment on Elizabeth Street Friday afternoon.

The fire started on a stove at 304 Elizabeth St. as a person was cooking and spread to the kitchen cabinets, Assistant Fire Chief Tom Lenart, Jr. said.

The kitchen suffered fire, smoke and water damage, but firefighters kept it contained to the one room.

There were no injuries.

It was reported at about 2:30 p.m. About 25 firefighters from the city’s three companies responded.

The incident closed Elizabeth Street for about 45 minutes and created some traffic problems for buses leaving the Irving School and the St. Mary-St. Michael school, both of which are nearby.
