Derby state Rep. Themis Klarides called on the legislature to conduct hearings into the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles after the resignation of Andres Ayala, the DMV commissioner, was announced Wednesday.
In a prepared statement, Klarides, who leads the House Republican caucus, bemoaned the “chronic foul ups that have plagued the Department of Motor Vehicles,” saying problems at the DMV have “created great hardship and angst for motorists (that) continue to this day.”
Ayala’s resignation was first reported by the Hartford Courant’s Jon Lender.
The resignation came after what the Courant called “a nightmarish year of problems — including snafus with a new computer system, a tripling of wait times for DMV customers, erroneous revocation of drivers’ vehicle registrations, and the release of false information to the public.”
In her statement Klarides said Ayala was responsive to her office regarding complaints from constituents, but “the problems remain.”
“It is ever more critical that the Transportation Committee conduct a thorough hearing and investigation as soon as the legislative session convenes in two weeks,” Klarides’ statement said.
