Latest COVID Data From The Naugatuck Valley Health District

The Naugatuck Valley Health District reported two new COVID-19 cases since Sept. 3.

The latest report issued Tuesday, Sept. 8 shows single new positive tests in Ansonia and Derby. A total of 1,787 people in the NVHDs jurisdiction have tested positive since March. There have been 209 COVID associated deaths locally since March, with an additional deaths labeled as COVID probable.

The NVHDs jurisdiction includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour, and Shelton. Oxford is in the Pomperaug Health District.

The State of Connecticut does not issue specific COVID recovery” data. Neither does Florida, for that matter, because defining recovery” as an absolute term can be tough, as The Valley Indy first reported in April.

Gov. Ned Lamont reported Tuesday that the state’s infection rate remains just below 1 percent. The state reported six additional COVID-associated deaths since Friday. Fifty people are in the hospital — down eight patients since Friday.

State Republicans have become increasingly frustrated with Lamont’s COVID-related executive orders. The state’s decision to suspend traditional high school football on Friday has been met with strong opposition.

On Tuesday, state Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria (R‑Seymour) Tweeted that she had signed a letter imploring the governor to meet with DPH and the CIAC and work out a way that our student athletes can continue with football this coming fall or possibly in the spring.”

The decision to suspend football is not the right one,” she said.

The letter states that Connecticut has done a good job getting a handle on COVID, and that the kids deserve to play.

At a press conference Tuesday, Lamont said that high school football might return in 2021, perhaps in the spring.

The state’s Department of Health advised that football not return in the fall because of the sport’s potential to spread the virus.
