Lawyers Still Working On Shelton Stabbing Case

Toai Nguyen, a Shelton man with a history of mental health problems who allegedly stabbed his sister in October 2010, is still considering entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

According to police, Nguyen attacked his sister unprovoked at their Maple Street apartment and used a knife to slash at her throat. She managed to fight him off and run from the apartment. She survived the attack.

Nguyen was scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Milford today (Wednesday, Sept. 7). However, his case was continued until Oct. 13.

Kenneth Bunker, Nguyen’s public defender, had a psychological report completed. The state is waiting for one of their experts to review that report.

A family friend told the Valley Indy previously that Nguyen becomes violent when he does not take medication for his mental health issues.

In 2008 he beat his father badly using the Club, an anti-theft device used on car steering wheels.

He served time in prison and was released in 2010.

According to police, Nguyen entered the U.S. illegally. Authorities tried to deport him after he attacked his father. Officials in Vietnam, his native country, refused to take him.
