Letter: Derby Can’t File Annual Audits On Time

On June 9, 2021, Mayor Dziekan issued a letter to city residents in the Valley Indy saying that with the new budget, Derby’s financial ship is straightened.”

I would like to remind him that despite a June 3 memo from the State’s Office of Policy and Management calling him out because the city audit was completed late four years in row, we still don’t have the audit almost a full month later.

The newest audit was due on 12/31/20 now making it six months late! Is that his definition of financial stability and political deals? Why is the finance department in shambles? Could it be the Mayor’s absentee style of leadership? Maybe if he followed the Charter and worked at being a full time Mayor, we would be in better fiscal shape!

According to the OPM memo, Derby’s audit has been late every year for four years. That’s not only unprecedented, it is totally unacceptable. Who runs a business like that? I may not be a CPA but I know this isn’t fiscally sound management.

I challenge the Mayor to fully disclose all the communication his administration has had with the State on this issue for the last four years. We intend to hold this administration accountable for its lack of accountability and blatant lack of transparency. The people of Derby deserve answers to this fiscal crisis after nearly four years of absentee leadership.
