DERBY — I write to respectfully ask the voters of Derby for their support and vote to continue to be the City Treasurer.
In the several months that I have been City Treasurer, I have used my training and experience as a finance professional and as a coach to assess the financial status of the City of Derby. I prefer a methodical and disciplined approach to financial analysis and management as opposed to a process based on politics and opinions.
I can tell you that there is a great deal of room for significant improvement in our city finances. The many years of unanswered auditor recommendations and gaps in budgetary review and oversight are appalling. The only thing worse than these atrocities are the financial policies and decisions that have allowed the City of Derby to get ripped off by the institutions managing our money. I am investigating how this was allowed to happened and will report my findings to the appropriate bodies.
The City Treasurer position is an independently elected position that needs an independent voice to be the watchdog over City finances. I pledge to be that independent voice in a bi-partisan manner for all of Derby.
I urge your support of our entire capable and committed Democratic Team on Row A lead by Joe DiMartino as we are all committed to showing up and working hard every day for a better Derby.
Sincerely,
Maria Conlon
City Treasurer
