Letter: It’s Time For A Change In Derby

DERBY — Derby just doesn’t want change. We need it.

I received a mailer a few weeks back from the incumbent administration that states the city receives 70% of its revenue from the taxes of single-family homes. I was surprised that this was in material that focused on renewing our faith in the current administration and the direction of the city. We already know how much we pay in taxes due to the Dziekan Administration’s handling of the 2019 fiscal crisis. We need a change in leadership for a better Derby.

I’ve been a resident of this City for over 30 years. I grew up here. My parents and grandparents planted roots in this town because it was home, and as much as they put into this city the city gave back. It was a community that offered opportunity and security. In the past few decades, it seems that the fragile relationship of a community and its people have become fractured. The opportunity and security have become less and less, while the people are forced to give more and more. We can do better.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. Our city sits within one of the largest corridors for trade and commerce. We have the opportunity to bring business back to our community, with job opportunities and fiscal stability. We need to focus on the big picture and attend to the small details, from keeping our streets clean to cleaning up our act in bringing and securing business; we need to make sure that our resident’s quality of life improves across the board. The only way to do that is by showing up and doing the job every day. We need a group of elected officials this November to create and execute strategies for long term growth.

I stand with Joe DiMartino and the Democratic team Row A who look to create stable opportunities for all who seek to plant roots in Derby. From business owners, employees, residents, and visitors alike, we need a municipal government that will work and strive for growth. The old saying it takes a village” has never been so true for our community. We need to lead by example and, if elected, that is what we will do. We appreciate your consideration of support on Election Day.

Sincerely,

Brian Coppolo

Candidate for 2nd Ward Alderman
