Letter: Mayor Dziekan's Newsletter Is Campaign Literature

To the Editor,

I am a longtime Derby resident and voter. I’m writing this letter in response to the recent political mailer that I received on behalf of Mayor Richard Dziekan. While it is labeled as a newsletter, make no mistake about it, this is a political campaign brochure that is being funded by us, the taxpayers. Each taxpayer in the City of Derby is paying a portion of this expense to help Richard Dziekan do what he can’t do himself, fund his own reelection campaign.

This is the third such political mailer and just like with each of the last ones, there are inaccuracies, errors and it is just poorly done. I think that if there is any key message in this brochure, it is that it just screams out to the Derby voter is that for all intents and purposes is that Richard Dziekan is just an election year Mayor, a three-month Mayor if you will. In each of the last few elections, Richard Dziekan campaigns follows a similar playbook; he literally does nothing for the first 15 months or so. He is barely in the office, he does not go to events like tree lighting ceremonies or school events, and he lays low, hangs out in Ansonia, works his second job and ignores the city of Derby. Then, as election season approaches, it looks like a light switch goes on. He then starts to communicate, his Facebook page starts to pick up activity, he starts to realize that he has to put on the facade of being a mayor and he begins to campaign.

I am confident that the citizens of Derby will see through this. I am confident that the citizens of Derby will realize that the for the last 15 months since his last election, there has been political infighting, the state is reviewing our finances, there’s been a revolving door at City Hall and not much has been accomplished. There is no campaign style brochure or city newsletter that can hide the fact that it is time for a change. As a life long city of Derby resident, I know that people are fed up and feel that Richard Dziekan has turned our city into a laughing stock and an embarrassment. I believe that people will look past the flurry of activity that is about to come and will vote for change next November.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Ducharme
DERBY
