Letter: Vote 'No' On Derby Road Bond

DERBY — To the editor,

On November 8, 2022, residents of Derby will be asked to vote on a 3 million dollar road bond package. This is question number two on the ballot.

I am urging each Derby citizen to vote NO for a number of reasons.

There is no plan. This project has been rushed and pushed without any public discussion, communication, or explanation. We haven’t even shared a list of roads with the Board of Alders or the Board of Taxation. There are just too many open questions such as overall cost after the interest-rate is factored in, whether there are other funding sources to address this or why has this administration continually let our infrastructure get in such a poor shape.

One only needs to look at the work being done up in the Laurel Avenue part of Derby and listen to the residents of that neighborhood to see how unhappy they are with the work being done there.

On the other side of town, one only needs to talk to the residents of Chatfield St., Hawthorne Avenue, Park Avenue, E Street and Grove Street whose houses are still not whole from a mudslide and who have to continually fight this administration day after day to only get their houses back to the shape they were once in.

Where is the comprehensive capital plan and where is the town discussion and collaboration? The answer is, it does not exist.

This project was rammed through to hide the fact that this administration has been a failure when it comes to maintaining our city and collaborating with our various elected members of our Boards. This is a gross misuse of taxpayer money to create photo opportunities showing a few roads being paved before Mayor Dziekan has to appear before the voters…I know we’ve all seen the wonderful newsletter. They are trying to put a band-aid on this broken ineffective administration.

I respectfully urge all Derby citizens to not fall for this and to vote NO on question number two and hold Rich Dziekan accountable for his inability to effectively lead our city.

Respectfully,
Melissa Mongillo
Derby
