Letter: Ways To Help The People Of Ukraine

To the editor:

Like many of us, I am absolutely devastated by the actions that Russia has taken against Ukraine. The damage, not only to property, but to the innocent families that live in peace, is absolutely deplorable. As a Veteran, I find myself trying to figure out how, if in any way possible, that I can help.

When I was deployed to Afghanistan, I saw firsthand how people live when they live in fear. People that, like you and me, only want security, safety, and a meaningful life. The death, destruction, and chaos that Afghanistan was opened my eyes to how truly good we have it here in America. We don’t have to worry about invasions, we don’t have about unnecessary attacks on our soil, and we don’t have to worry about our friends or family being drafted to serve in a war that nobody, except the aggressor, wanted.

I can’t even begin to imagine what the citizens of Ukraine are going through right now. Many are fleeing the country, fleeing their homes and their livelihoods, just to stay alive. While this is heartbreaking, there are ways that we, American citizens, can help.

As a community, Ansonia is strong and caring. We look out for each other, help our neighbors, and are always available to lend a helping hand to someone in need. Today, I am asking you to lend a hand to those who you may never meet, but need your help more than ever.

After doing some research, I have found three amazing charities that we can donate to. These charities have a proven track record, and will help the innocent families in the Ukraine as they evade the war zone that was once their home.
