Letter: We Are Ansonia Strong

On Monday, all Ansonia Public Schools Staff reported to the high school for the first day. As we entered, we were given We Are Ansonia Strong shirts. These shirts were a gift from and in memory of Dominick Golia, a long-time member of our Ansonia family.

For me, Ansonia strong has a deeper meaning. It represents the struggles we have been through yet how far we have come in the last year. This summer we were able to reinstate six elementary and five middle school teaching positions. An elementary secretary and assistant principal were also added back.

At the high school, a career and technical education teacher was hired and stronger connections were made with the community, particularly in the medical and technical fields.

Very simply put, the days of 32 students per class are well behind us. Our students will be better prepared for the future and have more opportunities than ever before.

These accomplishments are proof of what can be accomplished when we all work together focusing on what is best for our students. It was done through the creativity, fiscal conservancy, and dedication of Dr. DiBacco with support and perseverance from the Ansonia Federation of Teachers.

I would also like to thank those who helped along the way. This would include AFT Connecticut, The Alliance to Reclaim our Schools, the state department and board of education, U.S. Representative DeLauro, and State Representative Rochelle.

Thank you for listening and doing what you could to support our students. There is still a great amount of work to be done. Our students still deserve more, but I am excited about the direction we are moving

With the start of school this week, I look forward to the next chapter for education in Ansonia, and to leaving the past where it belongs, behind us. Good luck to all Ansonia parents, teachers, and students as we begin the school year.

We are Ansonia strong!
