Machine Sends Smokes Plumes Above Derby’s Park Avenue

Derby firefighters Friday prevented flames from damaging an industrial building at the intersection of Park Avenue and B Street.

Emergency responders received a report of smoke billowing from the Manger Die Casting Co. at about 8:45 a.m.

There’s a melting pot in there where they melt metal down. It was causing a smoke condition and was starting to extend out of the pot a little bit,” said Derby Fire Chief Thomas Lenart, Jr.

Firefighters used dry powder to put out the flames.

We were able to control the flames until the owner got here and was able to shut the machine down,” Lenart said.

There were no employees inside the building at the time of the fire. Books by the Falls occupies the front portion of the building.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming out of the large brick building for at least 20 minutes.

Shelton fire crews were also called to the scene to back up Derby.

The Derby Fire Department responded to the same address for the same problem three weeks ago.

However, the problem this time was with a different machine inside the building.

Manger Die’s address is 251 Roosevelt Drive, but the problematic machines are on the Park Avenue side of the building.
